The East Greater Toronto Area (East GTA) is the eighth region Metroscapes has expanded to. When Metroscapes became a multi-city project in 2019, it opened my eyes to how much shifting a couple hundred kilometres and growing a few decades later can really change the landscape. This motivated me to keep expanding, and in 2024, I went from 4 isolated cities to the entire Toronto metro area.
The East GTA consists of the urban nearshore areas of Durham Region: Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington. The total area of analysis, while still covering some small rural parts and part of an urban nation park, is only roughly the size of Toronto. That said, it is defined by several smaller watersheds rolling south from the Oak Rides Moraine, nuclear energy and major industry, as well as railways and highways linking the rest of the GTA with eastern parts of Ontario.
